The Maine Music Society announces its 2019-2020 Concert Season
Mark your calendars now for a season of spectacular musical presentations. The Maine Music Society’s Artistic Director John Corrie has selected an impressive array of songs and compositions to mark his final year with MMS.
Battle of the Blends XXVIwill kick off this season on November 2, 2019 at 7:30 in its typical exuberant style. Year after year the amazing talent performing a cappella music blows audiences away. It is such a joy to present singers from around the state of Maine and beyond. This year’s groups include the Deansmen [Bates College], Fermata NoWhere [Edward Little High School], Maine Music Society Chamber Singers, None of the Above, Northern Pitch and Vocal Solution. What a line-up! You just can’t miss this popular concert of a cappella singing.
On December 14 and 15, 2019 at 3:00 pm, the MMS Chorale will present Heritage Holidays featuring the exquisite Christmas cantata: Hodie by Ralph Vaughan Williams. Hear this extraordinary setting of the familiar Christmas story composed by one of the most beloved British composers. In addition the Chorale will perform seasonal Chanukah songs and Christmas carols. We’ll conclude this festive concert with the traditional audience sing-along. Come usher in your holidays with us!
The performance of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony on March 29, 2020 at 4:00 pm in the magnificent Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul will undoubtedly be the highlight of the musical season. The Maine Music Society Chorale and Orchestra will once again join music-making forces with the Bates College Choir and Orchestra, the Schola Cantorum of the Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul and the chamber choirs of Edward Little and Lewiston High Schools to present the monumental 9th Symphony by Ludwig van Beethoven. The year 2020 marks the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth. It is a most fitting way to celebrate this composer by performing his last symphony, which includes the triumphant choral last movement – the “Ode to Joy”.
In the last concert of the season, A Gala Farewell, on May 17, 2020 at 3:00 pm, John Corrie and the Chorale will continue to Make Music Soar by presenting many of their favorites from the past 14 years. Maine Music Society Presents Handel’s oratorio Judas Maccabaeus
[LEWISTON, Maine] – On March 30 & 31 at the Gendron Franco Center, the Maine Music Society (MMS) Chorale and Orchestra will present an exhilarating rendition of Handel’s oratorio Judas Maccabaeus.
Composed in 1746 and written in English, this Baroque masterpiece tells the Old Testament story of Judas Maccabaeus, who led the Judaic struggle against the Hellenist kings for his people to worship in freedom. While the events in Handel’s oratorio took place more than 2,000 years ago in 170-160 BCE, the themes of integrity, liberty, and loyalty are timeless.
Together with well-known and beloved professional soloists Joelle Morris, Luette Saul, Martin Lescault, and Leon Griesbach, the Maine Music Society (MMS) Chorale and Orchestra stunningly dramatize this powerful piece. The soloists take on various roles that weave in and out of the many choruses to dramatize the fight of the Maccabees against and their eventual victory over the occupying kings. Their spirited vocal renditions enable you to envision this historical struggle and experience the emotions as though you were there.
Judas Maccabaeusis filled with a mixture of beautiful songs: haunting, victorious, encouraging, and thankful, as well as the unforgettable triumphant final chorus of “Hallelujah, Amen.”
Come delight in this exciting Baroque masterpiece by thecomposer of Messiah, George Frideric Handel.
For a preview of what’s in store, listen in to John Corrie and Susan Trask on 105.5’s Breakfast Club on Tuesday, March 26, at 8:00 a.m.

A Mozart Mystery
On Saturday, March 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, March 25 at 3:00 p.m. at the Gendron Franco Center, the Maine Music Society Chorale and Orchestra, joined by professional soloists Sarah Bailey, Jazmin DeRice, Martin Lescault and Carl Steidel , will present a program featuring Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s Requiem, a work shrouded in mystery. For whom did Mozart compose this requiem? Since he was composing it literally on his deathbed, dictating to his assistant Sussmayr, who completed it after Mozart’s death? Although much of the music exists only in sketches, the Requiem has become one of the most beloved of Mozart’s works.
Mozart was a freakishly gifted and highly trained child musician. From a young age he composed in all musical genres from opera to ballroom. In the Requiem, he not only deployed these diverse musical types to create dramatic contrasts between one part of the text and another but also melded them to create vivid musical textures.
This wonderful musical program also includes the Solemn Vespers for the Sabbath composed at the request of the Archbishop when Mozart was only in his 20’s . Here too you will find contrasts as the trumpets, trombones and drums provide a militant tone to the opening psalm, but then, in the second psalm the violins and soloists create a soothing and intimate ambience.
Throughout the Vespers and the Requiem, Mozart displays his mastery of musical styles ensuring that the listener is never bored. It is interesting to note that some of the themes are regularly used for TV commercials. Can you recognize them?
Our talented singers and instrumentalists joined by the afore-mentioned well known professional soloists are thrilled to perform these magnificent works by one of the most celebrated composers of the late 18th century.
Don’t miss this spectacular performance.
